You ask if your audience has seen the famous perception experiment on YouTube, where a group of basketball players pass a basketball and count the number of passes… the one where you completely miss a giant gorilla walking out, pounding his chest, and leaving.

You say, “I’m sure you’d see it if you were there live and up close, right? Well, we’re going to reenact the experiment.” You take 3 cards out of a vegan leather holder, and on each card you show a different number of basketballs. You show each card honestly, front and back, and ask them to guess how many basketballs there are in total? Then you ask, “But did you miss the gorilla?” They look confused. Then you flip the cards over and show that a huge gorilla is depicted across the three cards. How on earth could you have missed that?

Prepare for total chaos. Waves of laughter, disbelief, chatter about how they could have missed it. Then the cycle repeats. Note—this reaction will continue until you leave.

Once you’ve made the gorilla appear, you can show the cards front and back, you can hand out a few for them to examine, but nobody wants to because their brains have just melted and they need closure—talking about it helps.
