Based on an idea by Gérard BAKNER and adapted by Dan TAYLOR. ESTHER and FRIPON: Two figurines representing a panther “Mademoiselle ESTHER” and a small teddy bear “Monsieur FRIPON”.

Explain to your young audience that every evening, the zookeeper locks ESTHER and FRIPON in their respective cages and places the favorite food of his two residents in front of each cage. Then show two other figurines representing a piece of meat and a jar of honey, and explain that every evening, when everyone has left and it’s completely quiet, we can see ESTHER and FRIPON coming out of their cages to eat.

Suggest that a child take the zookeeper’s place for a special occasion; give them the “vlees” and the “pot honing”, which they will place in front of the correct cages themselves. Cover ESTHER with her cage and move her a few centimeters, or place the whole setup on a different table. Invite the child to serve the food to Mademoiselle ESTHER. Logically, they will serve her the “vlees”. Monsieur FRIPON, in turn, is locked in his cage, which you place next to the first one, and the child serves him: the “pot honing”. Everyone waits for the outcome of our two companions. Against all expectations, nothing happens… something must have gone wrong!

Lift both cages at the same time. The audience realizes that your improvised “dierenverzorger” has made a mistake! He served honey to the panther and meat to the little bear!

Ask him to start over and be more careful this time. But again, nothing happens… and when the cages are lifted, the audience notices that the meals still haven’t been served properly!

However, the audience begins to voice their suspicions. Indeed, every time you lock one of the animals in its cage, you flip it over before putting everything back. There is only one solution that stands out in the eyes of the audience: each figurine depicts a panther on one side and a teddy bear on the other!

But in the end, they will be wrong, and you will have a surprising ending!
