Evidence of a Well Spent Life – Helge Thun
Every routine Helge Thun performs is well thought out, structured, and designed for success. Helge is not only a fantastic magician and member of the prestigious Flicking Fingers collective, but also a successful stand-up comedian in his home country of Germany. We are therefore extremely excited to present his very first English-language book: Evidence of a Well Spent Life.
As Guy Hollingworth writes in the foreword: there are countless books on card magic, but few focus on longer, structured routines the way this book does. Here you’ll discover entertaining and deceptive card acts in which multiple effects are woven together into a single powerful, cohesive whole.
Each routine is theatrically constructed, with every moment building on the previous one and leading to a powerful, unforgettable climax. For example, in “Better Safe than Sorry 3,” three cards are found while the deck is secured with rubber bands. The trick is then repeated under stricter conditions, after which the last card, folded in four, appears in a sealed plastic box—once again wrapped with a rubber band.
Helge’s structured approach makes his routines not only stronger but also more deceptive. In Eight Ahead!, he takes the One Ahead principle to the extreme and is miles ahead of his audience. Four signed cards are found in various ways and ultimately transform into Aces. The original cards are then found in four impossible locations: between two cards, inside the card box, in your wallet, and in a matchbox.
In addition to these stunning routines, the book also contains original techniques that are perfect for stand-up, close-up, or roaming acts. Many of these techniques come with a QR code that allows you to view them immediately. In addition, Helge shares various essays to help you take your magic to the next level. His insights on using humor as a distraction, translating card magic to a stand-up setting, and cleverly structuring your acts are worth their weight in gold. (His essay on how to interact with audiences should be required reading for every serious performer.)
A particular highlight is Helge’s work on creating signed duplicate cards. He teaches you not only the method but also various applications, including a stunning Brainwave, an impossible Torn and Restored, and perhaps one of the strongest Traveler’s routines we’ve ever seen. Each edition of the book also includes eight special cards, so you can get started right away.
Are you looking for card magic for the stage, do you want to perform with signed duplicates, or do you simply love well-structured magic? Then Evidence of a Well Spent Life is an absolute must-have for your bookshelf.
