Sixteen years ago, I released CSI – Coffee Shop Illusion : a pocket-sized miracle in which a real metal ring vanished into a cup of coffee. No switch tricks, no manipulation. It was my first and only foray into mainstream magic. It appeared on TV, was sold through all major dealers, and embraced by professional performers around the world.

Then came the knockoffs.

Less than nine months after its launch, CSI was copied by the Chinese market. They even pirated the entire DVD, complete with my email address and the cheerful message: “Stuur me gerust een bericht als je hulp nodig hebt!” . Hundreds of people did this. They had all bought fake versions that didn’t work, made from dubious and toxic materials. I had to pull the original product from sale to avoid being inundated with complaints about something I hadn’t made.

Fast forward to now.

A customer recently asked me to make the gimmick again. Another asked if he could buy the rights. But the real shocking news? The counterfeit version is still being sold, all these years later.

That reignited the fire. So I started all over again.
