Here’s what happens:

The magician asks the participant to take a few cards from a deck consisting entirely of letters. They can then shuffle the cards as much as they like and place them face-up or face-down—it’s entirely up to them. The magician takes the cards and again gives the spectator the choice to place them face-up or face-down. After the last cards are spread out, the cards that ended up face-down are removed. When these cards are examined, they turn out to be the letters that spell the spectator’s name!
