A deck of Tarot cards is presented to your audience. You tell a story from days gone by about the wealthy who would pay dearly to gain protection against bad cards or curses that might arise during their Tarot reading.

Three spectators are asked to participate, and each receives a small wooden disc said to protect the wearer from harm. The Tarot cards are then shuffled, and each spectator rolls a die. Once they are satisfied with the total number fate has given them, each spectator receives… Sorry, spectator: five Tarot cards from the top of the deck. They then proceed to move cards from the top of their deck to the bottom, exactly the number they chose with the dice. The top cards of each of their decks are revealed. You give each participant a reading for their chosen Tarot cards. The readings are all wonderful and positive, but why wouldn’t they be? They have the protective amulet. You might think this is just a coincidence? You ask each spectator to take their charm out of their pockets and turn them over so they can clearly see that each of the discs is engraved to represent their chosen Tarot card. Still not convinced? You now turn over every other card in their deck—and indeed, the entire deck—and they are all DEATH, proving that they are indeed protected.
