What is the Crescent Rubber Band Effect?

A magician takes a yellow rubber band, pulls on it, and tears off a piece, creating a small circular rubber band. The remaining yellow rubber band resembles a cookie with a bite taken out of it, resulting in a crescent-shaped rubber band. The audience is free to examine everything! Next, the magician produces a red rubber band, takes the yellow mini-rubber band back from the audience, and drops it onto the red rubber band. The yellow and red rubber bands fuse together to form a single two-colored rubber band.
